Job Summary
The Donor Communications and Research Intern will work to support relationships with key Special Olympics groups such as donors, board members and others. Through database screening and in-depth research on individual prospects, the intern will help the Strategic Gifts team deepen their understanding of new and prospective donors and help recommend new funding opportunities when appropriate. The intern will also play a vital role in the solicitation of grant funding requests, with a goal of completing one full grant application to a major foundation during the term. In addition, the intern will play a role in the day-to-day activities of the team, including work on donor stewardship reports, donor outreach and acknowledgment efforts and logistical coordination for key Special Olympics events such as the 2018 USA Games and the 50th Anniversary celebration.
This is a temporary internship that will last approximately 2.5 months, starting on or around June 1 and ending on or around August 15, 2018. The intern will report to Special Olympics office in Washington, DC three days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
All responsibilities will be in partnership with one or more members of the Strategic Gifts team.
- Complete one full grant application during the term
- Assist in creation of donor stewardship reports
- Research new prospects and funding opportunities; enter findings in tracker
- Prospecting new donors and creating donor profiles
- Drafting gift acknowledgments
- Donor call support
- Registration support for honored guests at USA Games and 50th Anniversary
- Logistical support for honored guests (hotels, transportation, etc.) - USA Games and 50th Anniversary
- General data entry and tracking - USA Games and 50th Anniversary
Qualification Requirements
- Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate with external audiences
- Experience in copywriting and editing
- Experience in grant writing is a plus
- Solid understanding of project management principles
- Working knowledge of MS Office; working knowledge of Salesforce is a strong advantage
- Excellent communication (oral and written) skills
- Outstanding organizational and planning abilities
- Proficient command of English
- BA/BJ candidate in communications, PR, journalism or other relevant field
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Must be a team player
- Affinity to Special Olympics mission and goals
- Past/current volunteer experience working with Special Olympics athletes is a plus
