Description
Special Olympics, the largest global public health organization dedicated to people with intellectual disabilities, provides health clinics, services, and education for its athletes, trains health professionals in providing care to people with intellectual disabilities, conducts analyses of its athlete health data, and disseminates findings to policy makers, the media, partners, and the academic community. As of 2017, more than 130 Special Olympics country and State Programs globally engage in Special Olympics Healthy Athletes events, while many of those – with more adopting this approach - strive to provide a year-round, community-integrated approach to health for people with intellectual disabilities through Healthy Communities.
Special Olympics’ Research and Evaluation (R&E) department supports Special Olympics health work and other programming by monitoring progress and measuring the impact of SOI’s strategic plan and activities to create inclusion in communities throughout the world. In addition, the R&E department provides monitoring and evaluation technical assistance to country and state Special Olympics Programs, leads collection and analysis of health data, health, and evaluates the implementation of new health programming. To expand our capacity for research, SOI is seeking students who are interested in gaining internship experience in public health research and evaluation. Potential internship activities include:
- Aggregate data and research results to create reports and presentations
- Conduct literature reviews on topics, such as community inclusion, impact of sport on health, and long-term health outcomes
- Create and organize research databases
- Conduct health policy analysis
- Review of potential partners
- Assist with health/research events and meetings
- Develop and implement surveys to evaluate current programming
- Review and assist with updating existing data collection tools and resources
- Assist with cleaning and analysis of passive fitness tracker data
