Position Summary
The Director, Athletic Development is responsible for leading U.S. Ski & Snowboard’sathletic development team in delivering world leading athletic development servicesto all U.S. Ski & Snowboard sports, with a particular emphasis on Alpine skiing.Working collaboratively with multiple internal and external stakeholders the Director,Athletic Development will shape the philosophy and principles of athleticdevelopment for U.S. Ski & Snowboard, drive purposeful and innovative athleticdevelopment programming throughout the organization (both national team andthrough clubs/academies) and ensure U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes are optimallyphysically prepared to win medals on the international stage and help U.S. Ski &Snowboard achieve its Vision of “Best in the World” (most number of skiing andsnowboarding medals at the Olympics Games).
Primary Duties
Reporting to the High Performance Director and working closely with all U.S. Ski &Snowboard Sport Directors and Head Coaches the Director, Athletic Developmentwill:
- Work collaboratively with the High Performance Director, Athletic Development staff, Sports Medicine staff and Sport Coaches to shape the athletic developmentphilosophy and principles of U.S. Ski & Snowboard
- Mentor, support and manage all U.S. Ski & Snowboard Athletic Development staff
- Manage the High Performance Coordinator to successfully execute the goals of theHigh Performance Center Partnership program and develop a world-leading athletic development system at targeted clubs/academies
- Coordinate and manage the athletic development services to all US Ski &Snowboard sports, including the design and delivery of athletic developmentprograms to allocated athletes/sports.
- Work closely with Sports Medicine staff to ensure a collaborative and integratedapproach to injury prevention and return to snow/competition.
- Manage the athletic development areas of U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s Center ofExcellence, including scheduling, budgeting, equipment ordering/maintenance andoperational procedures.
- Lead on the on-going evaluative and iterative process of athletic developmenttesting, including the translation of data into meaningful and relevant informationto athletes, coaches and U.S. Ski & Snowboard leadership.
- Design and production of resource material for coach and athlete education programs.
- Assist with the preparation of budgetary information and projections for the fiscal management of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s High Performance Program as it pertains to these programs.
- Oversee the U.S. Ski & Snowboard's High Performance internship program.
This position works primarily from the US Ski & Snowboard Center of Excellence. Hours – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. weekdays. Frequent weekend, early morning or evening work will be required to deliver athletic development services, especially when traveling with teams. This position is paid a salary and is exempt from overtime pay.
***For appropriately qualified and interested candidates there is the possibility of this position being employed in conjunction with the University of Utah (approximate time allocation would be 80% U.S. Ski & Snowboard / 20% University of Utah). Candidates must hold a PhD and relevant research/teaching experience to be considered for this option and should indicate their interest in pursuing this in their cover letter***
Main Attributes
- A minimum of undergraduate studies in a high-performance related discipline, such as sport science, exercise physiology, strength and conditioning or kinesiology.
- Ideally post-graduate studies in one of these areas and for consideration for the joint position with University of Utah a PhD and relevant research/teaching experience.
- Current certification from the CSCCa, NSCA, and/or USAW or international equivalents
- At least 10 years of applied athletic development experience with elite (Olympic/Professional level) athletic programs.
- Specialist knowledge in the area of athletic development as it pertains to the demands of skiing and snowboarding (ideally with specific knowledge of alpine skiing)
- Experience of successfully managing, highly qualified staff and working with multiple/complex teams
- Experience of working as part of a support team supporting medal/championship winning athletes/teams
- Excellent competency in physical testing and data analysis
- Significant experience presenting to both small and large groups
- A strategic thinker with demonstrable experience of developing long-term performance plans and turning those plans into meaningful and impactful programs
- Excellent interpersonal, time management, and communication skills and use these effectively within this environment.
