Internship Profile
As a U.S. Ski & Snowboard communications intern, you will learn the ins and outs of how to manage, track and update different modes of information distribution to key stakeholder audiences. With a focus on new media, you will get a hands-on internship that will prepare you for PR and communication opportunities in the future. This educational opportunity is ideal for a communications, public relations or marketing student or graduate looking to learn and gain practical experience from the best national governing body and a world-class sports organization. As an intern on our team, you will learn while contributing your skills to further the U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s mission of making the United States of America the Best in the World in Olympic skiing and snowboarding.
Learning Objectives
- Develop an understanding of communications and content creation for an Olympic sports organization.
- Learn about targeted communications including social media strategy, email, website content, video channels and other distribution methods.
- Develop writing and communication skills to communicate with a variety of different audiences.
- Learn the grassroots of how to create, maintain and grow media relations.
- Develop management and organizational skills through event support and inter-departmental projects.
- Develop an understanding of working with elite athletes through content gathering and production with the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team.
Educational Activities
- Experience working in communications and marketing during the competition season, becoming versed in producing editorial coverage of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team.
- Develop and curate content for various publications, including newsletters, annual reports and website.
- Draft press releases for U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s corporate communications.
- Update and develop local, regional, national and international media lists.
- Assist in producing communication materials for national team athletes.
- Grow media relationships through hands-on experience at events and activities.
- Write stories about and conduct interviews with U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes.
Required Skills and Background
- Must be a student or graduate in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field
- Critical thinking skills
- Strong writing ability
- High attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Educational background in working on websites, including web content management systems
- Strong organizational skills
- Positive, upbeat presence with others, including U.S. Ski & Snowboard staff and external contacts
- Self-starter, with the ability to complete projects in the timeline established
- Strong business computer skills including basics (Word, Excel, email, web), HTML experience is a plus
- Willingness to participate in an educational environment and to learn new skills
Terms
- Applications must successfully complete U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s background screening.
- Applicants must complete SafeSport Education Training prior to beginning the internship.
- Applicants must provide proof of health insurance.
- Applicants must provide evidence that their institution of higher learning will grant academic credit upon completion of this internship opportunity.
- Other requirements as needed by U. S. Ski & Snowboard.
Mentoring
The intern is mentored directly by the Director of Marketing and Communications and will pursue educational and experiential exercises alongside the Communications & PR Manager
Duration
The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Communications Internship will commence on May 1, 2018 and conclude on March 30, 2019.
Expectations
The internship requires 10-15 hours of commitment per week.
The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Communications internship is not a placement service for future employment nor is it a substitute for current U.S. Ski & Snowboard employee responsibilities. The goal of the program is to further the knowledge and experience in the field of communications by immersing the intern in an intense, hands-on, educational mentored environment.
Compensation
The U.S Ski & Snowboard Communications internship is an unpaid internship for credit only. Final applicants can receive academic credit for their time with U.S. Ski & Snowboard. The individual’s university will determine the number of academic credits.
