Job Summary

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Head Coach prepares the team for a full intercollegiate varsity season, including in-season and non-traditional practices, scouting of opponents and pre-season tryouts.

Responsibilities of the Head Coach include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Organize and conduct team practices to prepare for and compete in team competitions.
  • Develop a recruiting plan and evaluate and recruit qualified student athletes. Travel locally, regionally and nationally to identify prospective student-athletes and coordinate all aspects of recruitment via mailings, telephone, travel and recruit visits.
  • Travel locally, regionally and nationally for any regular-season events, championships, conference and/or national meetings, fundraising, alumni and community events.
  • Prepare and manage operating, recruiting, and fundraising budgets.
  • Oversee student-athletes academic progress and be available for consultation/support for student-athletes.
  • Comply with all NCAA Division III, NEWMAC and Wheaton rules and regulations and ensure assistant coaches comply with the same.
  • Work closely with the Athletic Communications Director to develop a media plan and be available for interviews and speaking engagements both internally and externally.
  • Select and purchase all equipment necessary for the program.
  • Work with facilities director on supervision and upkeep of Emerson Gymnasium and other relevant facilities.
  • Serve in an administrative capacity as needed, including a secondary duty and game management assignments, as well as serving on department and campus-wide committees.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, train and evaluate assistant coaches and student workers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and 2-4 years of collegiate coaching experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends throughout the year to accomplish the tasks necessary for success in this field.
  • Commitment to working and teaching within an environment that embraces the development of students around their education, cultural diversity, mental health awareness and healthy masculinity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree, collegiate basketball playing experience, and 3-5 years of head coaching experience preferred.
