Job Summary
Requirements
- A university Bachelor’s degree, majoring in one or more areas of: physical education, health, or athletic administration
- A Bachelor’s degree in education
- TWO years of experience as an athletic director
- THREE years of experience as a classroom teacher
- Experience managing financial budgets for an organization
- Certification as an athletic administrator by the NIAA

Skills & Requirements
Health Curriculum
- Establish a K-12 curriculum framework for Physical Education, Health, and Wellness.
- Plan and teach Health courses to students in grades 6, 8, and 10.
- Expand knowledge of best practices for curricula through professional development and associations (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance – AAHPERD, National Outdoor Leadership School - NOLS).
- Continue to evaluate and revise written overview of school wide approach to health and wellness, for website and marketing.
- Support other groups on campus that promote the areas of athletics, health, and wellness.
- Support PE staff with professional development activities.
Athletics and Recreation
- Monitor and maintain soccer field operations.
- Oversee the operation of the gym and fitness center facilities and equipment for safe and effective use by athletes.
- Plan and deliver athletics programs and prep elective courses, in consideration of: available facilities, resources, season, student numbers, interest, and the school’s mission
- Reassess all athletic programs on an annual basis. Make recommendations for improvement to the head of Barrie Prep.
- Expand knowledge of best practices for the administration of athletics and recreation through professional development and associations (Maryland State Athletic Directors Association - MSADA, National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association – NIAAA).
- Support Barrie’s Equestrian Director and expand knowledge of equestrian program.
- Manage and organize the athletic team, officiating, and transportation schedules for interscholastic play throughout the year.
- Liaise with the league commissioner on game scores/standings, competitive issues, and league rulings; submit official team rosters; attend annual fall meeting.
- Plan, administer, and support special athletic events (cross-country meets; senior nights; pep rallies; athletic awards; field day; team photo days; faculty vs. student games; soccer, volleyball, and basketball league all-star games).
- Review team structures and league participation with overview report available to Administration team and Board.
- Conduct searches for coaching staff according to needs.
- Complete evaluations of coaches’ performances and provide feedback.
- Support coaches to be fully engaged in the Barrie community. Celebrate their efforts personally and publicly.
- Support coaching staff with professional development opportunities (coaching principles, athletic training, first aid, safety).
- Manage rentals of Jamie L. Athletics Gym, Strauss Gym, and Soccer field
Campus Health and Safety
- Monitor and supervise teams and spectators at athletic events.
- Work in conjunction with the school nurse and “emergency response team” to evaluate and support health-related school practices.
- Incorporate and facilitate knowledge of Risk Management in all aspects of Physical Education and Athletics, including but not limited to, safe facilities, gender equity, and sexual harassment in workplace.
- Maintain program for pre-concussion screening among all new students each fall season, in conjunction with the Children’s National Medical Center, in Rockville.
- Promote direct talk about healthy eating, risks of drug and alcohol abuse, mindfulness, meditation, anti- bullying, and other related topics by coaches and staff.
Finance and Management
- Work with chief finance officer on revenue income for facility rentals.
- Review and manage the physical education and athletic budget and recommend new structures where appropriate.
- Monitor and maintain inventory for athletics programs and the condition of facilities.
- Explore creative uses of resources, including both current physical and natural assets on campus.
- Promote and run the creation of auxiliary programs making use of campus facilities.
- Direct, facilitate, evaluate and improve upon the existing rental opportunities, keeping the mission of Barrie in mind and supporting the goals of our admissions department.
