Job Summary
The part-time Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach by providing effective leadership and day-to-day administration for the sport while fostering skill development and teamwork among student athletes. Primary responsibilities include: • Providing instruction, mentoring and guidance to student athletes to allow them to develop their athletic skills and abilities to maximum potential • Assisting the Head Coach in evaluating athletic ability and performance • Assisting in scheduling and organizing matches and providing coaching during these matches • Assuring that equipment and practice plans are prepared in advance of practice sessions • Assisting in making travel, meal and lodging arrangements for team members during 'away' regattas • Coordinating practice schedules as requested • Assisting the Head Coach in the recruitment of new student athletes by identifying and maintaining contact with promising student athletes and helping to coordinate recruitment trips The Assistant Coach must have a thorough knowledge and conscientious adherence to the rules and regulations of the NCAA, the Centennial Conference, Title IX and equal opportunity regulations, FERPA, and all applicable College policies and practices. The Assistant Coach must cooperate with Health Services and Athletic Trainers to assure injured athletes receive proper treatment and understands that all medical decisions related to a student athlete's health and well- being is the responsibility of the team physician and Certified Athletic Trainers and all final decisions regarding participation in practice and games lies with the medical staff. All known medical history related to injury or illness must be reported to the medical staff. Regular attendance at regattas, practices and meetings is required. Part-time members of the Franklin & Marshall College professional staff enjoy access to all College facilities including dining venues to suit all tastes, free access to recreation and fitness facilities for the employee dependent family members, free access to College libraries, plus free or reduced access to most College performances, lectures, and events, on-site professional development workshops, and health and wellness activities. Discounts are available on Lancaster YMCA memberships, long-term care insurance, and the campus bookstore. Medical benefits are not available to part-time employees. Minimum qualifications include: • At least a bachelor's degree or significant prior experience • Previous coaching and/or rowing experience • Superior verbal and written communication • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in team relationships with diverse students, faculty, staff, alumni, public and the media • Demonstrated commitment to all facets of student athlete welfare including academic success • Genuine commitment to gender equity and equal opportunity in the athletics and recreation programs and an understanding of the profile of a highly selective liberal arts college • Availability must include morning or evening practices each week and for regattas that would take place during evening and weekend hours • The ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential Because this position requires driving for College business, the successful candidate must possess a U.S. or Canadian driver's license which has been valid for at least two years, have a driving record that is free from excessive motor vehicle violations within the last three years, and have had no convictions in the last 24 months for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Because this position works with minors (non-F&M students under the age of 18) mandatory training must be completed prior to working with minors. The online training course must be completed at least once every two years by faculty, staff and Franklin & Marshall students who interact with minors. Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of reference checks, a criminal background verification, Pennsylvania ACT 153 background clearances, and verification of credentials. The College will coordinate these verifications.
