SUMMARY OF POSITION
Reporting to the Associate Head of School, the Director of Athletics exercises leadership for school-wide athletics (Preschool to Grade 12), including alignment with the School and Athletics Missions, program development, scheduling, and communications. Washington International School competes in the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference (PVAC) with boys, girls, and co-ed Middle and Upper School teams in as many as 11 sports. The Director collaborates with the Director of Co-Curricular programs to ensure athletics and other after school programs are complementary. The Director of Athletics is a senior leader within the school and serves on the Vision Team.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Athletics is a full-time, 12-month position, with key responsibilities outlined below. The Associate Head and Head of School may assign additional duties in support of school objectives.

  • Hire, supervise, and manage performance for all coaches and athletic trainers and coordinate necessary training for coaches.
  • Work with PVAC officials, PVAC coaches, and coaches from local non-PVAC schools to schedule games, meets, and matches.
  • Schedule use of WIS athletic facilities for practices and games (including gyms on both campuses, fields on both campuses, and the Tregaron outdoor basketball court).
  • Plan team travel to away games, as well as fan buses to major events.
  • Arrange for officials to be present at games.
  • Communicate with coaches, athletes, parents, and the community regarding games and special events, including management of the athletics pages/calendar on the WIS website.
  • Create a developmentally-appropriate team athletics program at the Primary School, with the potential of a competitive program for Grades 4 and 5 students.
  • Work with School and student leadership to encourage community involvement in and support for athletics and athletes.
  • Collaborate with the Director of FacilitiAes and Operations regarding use and maintenance of athletics facilities.
  • Coordinate with the School’s nurse manager regarding student wellness within athletics.
  • Collaborate with Admissions Office regarding recruitment of student athletes.
  • Develop and oversee the School athletics budget, in coordination with the CFO.
  • Manage ordering and inventory of athletics uniforms, operating within School guidelines regarding branding and identity.
  • Update Athletics Handbook as needed.

 

KEY QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred 
  • A valid First Aid and CPR certification issued by an authorized agency
  • Three to five years of experience as a high school administrator (administration in the area of athletics is preferred)
  • High school or comparable coaching experience 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent organizational strategies with the ability to manage complicated logistics efficiently and effectively
  • Understanding of the adolescent athlete
  • Ability to confer with parents and student athletes in support of the athletics program and student development and participation
  • A collaborative, inclusive approach to all aspects of school life

  • While performing the responsibilities the employee is required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is often required to sit for long periods of time.
  • Continual and/or intermittent walking for up to 15 minutes at a time may be required.
  • The employee is required to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands.
  • The employee may be required to lift 10–50 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is often moderate to loud.
  • Hours of work will include some evenings and weekends.
