Job Summary

Other areas of responsibility include but are not limited to the following:

• Representing the school at all general meetings of Athletic Directors in all leagues with which the school is
• Attending national and regional conferences each year and meetings of the state association (VISAA) while also visiting at least one leading independent school outside of the state.
• Working closely with the coaching staff to include providing professional development for coaches; presiding over periodic meetings with the coaching staff to discuss trends in athletics and policies specific to our school’s athletic program; meeting regularly, both individually and corporately, with coaches to discuss issues specific to a sport; guiding new coaches to assure that they have a clear understanding of the role of athletics in the life of the
• Assisting the Headmaster in recruiting, mentoring, and developing the best possible coaches, while maintaining a commitment to the teacher-coach
• Establishing and maintaining the athletic

Qualifications and Attributes / Application Process

• Extensive experience in independent school and/or intercollegiate athletics and familiarity with the special nuances of day school athletic programs are highly desirable.
• Candidates should possess strong leadership and communications skills—with an emphasis on persuasive public speaking ability and effective writing skills—an ability to quickly establish strong rapport with teacher-coaches, students, parents, and children across lower, middle, and upper school divisions, and a healthy, balanced appreciation and understanding of the developmental role athletics plays in schools.

• A bachelor’s degree is required, master’s degree preferred.
