Job Summary

 

Position Description: Financial Controller

The Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) is seeking candidates for a capable, diligent Financial Controller based in its Bethesda, MD headquarters. Formed in 2003, the MLSPA is a labor organization and is the exclusive bargaining representative for all MLS players. The Financial Controller will manage the accounting operations of the MLSPA and its for-profit subsidiary and must deliver precise information under strict deadlines. The ideal candidate for the position is bright, attentive, and efficient with self-assurance and the ability to complete work skillfully with little or no direct supervision.

Responsibilities:

  • ●  Oversee all accounting operations of the MLSPA and its for-profit subsidiary

  • ●  Maintain an organized and orderly filing system of all accounting documents and records

  • ●  Collaborate with external auditors

  • ●  With the MLSPA’s Executive Director, produce the annual budget and predict budget forecasts

  • ●  Maintain a comprehensive system of accounting records

  • ●  Generate financial reports as needed

  • ●  Ensure that financial reports comply with current accounting principles and financial reporting

    standards

  • ●  Publish complete and timely financial statements to senior staff and the MLSPA’s Executive

    Board

  • ●  Account for any budget variances and report significant discrepancies to senior staff

  • ●  Analyze capital investments

  • ●  Comply with all local, state, and federal tax filings and reporting requirements

  • ●  Schedule payments for accounts payable promptly

  • ●  Complete bank reconciliations

  • ●  Maintain a system of budgets and controls over all transactions to mitigate risk

    Requirements:

  • ●  Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration

  • ●  Minimum five years of bookkeeping or accounting experience

  • ●  Thorough knowledge of accountancy

  • ●  Superb mathematical, communication and interpersonal skills

  • ●  High attention to detail

    Value Add:

  • ●  Experience working with non-profit organizations and/or labor unions

  • ●  Familiarity with professional soccer and Major League Soccer in particular

  • ●  Multilingual (Spanish/French/Portuguese in particular)
