Job Summary

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

 Arsenal Data Analytics processes, analyses, interprets and models a wide range of football data in order to inform club decision-making.

These decisions span coaching, player recruitment, player high performance, player loans pathways, and financial modelling and involve staff across club departments.

The department also designs, develops, maintains and hosts software infrastructure, including a data lake containing a wide range of pre-processed football data where internal, proprietary data is seamlessly merged with publicly available 3rd party data.

Exploration and consumption of this data is available to other departments at the club including key stakeholders via bespoke dashboards and reports.

The department’s mission is to ensure that every footballing decision at Arsenal is supported with data.


JOB PURPOSE

This entry-level position works within the Data Analytics Department and plays a key role in contributing to the department’s research and insights team with a physical presence in our Chicago, IL USA office.

The post-holder will have a responsibility for working directly with staff in Chicago on:

-          Video analysis of soccer matches

-          Collaboration with Insights Analyst and Data Scientist colleagues to connect tactical and technical video analysis with data

-          Working with video and data analysis software (proprietary and commercial) to collect and analyze data

The role is accountable directly to the Operations Lead to perform video analysis in support of ongoing analytics operations.

As the department is geo-distributed, this role also requires remote collaboration with colleagues in the UK time zone and across the continental US, which may occasionally fall outside normal US Central Time business hours.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

·A     Accountable to the Data Analytics Lead to deliver timely, reliable and high-quality video analysis reports

·         Contributes at the individual level on analytics projects

·         Works closely with colleagues in the US and Colney, primarily Arsenal Data Analytics department colleagues on the Research & Insights and Data Operations teams.

 

·         Grow to supplement video analysis with basic data analysis skills using internal tools and metrics


MAIN JOB REQUIREMENTS AND PERSON SPECIFICATION

Specific Experience:

Required:

·         Deep knowledge of soccer either as a collegiate player or as an invested fan (watching approx. 1 game per week or more over the last 5 years) 

·         Advanced understanding of the game, including tactics, technique, players, etc.

·         Passion for soccer, data, and analytics 

·         Sharp eye for detail in a fast-paced environment

·         Quick and self-driven learner

·         Can work proficiently and independently with a proactive mindset to completing tasks 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Legally able to work in the US

 

 Desired:

·         Experience with tactical analysis, e.g. writing for an analytical or tactical soccer blog or website

  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and presentation

·         Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university

·         Legally able to travel to the UK

·         Experience with basic data analysis using R, Python or Tableau

·         Interest in analytics and continued learning

·         Currently located in or willing to relocate to Chicago, IL USA

·         Takes initiative, driving projects to completion

·         Works independently and thrives in situations with ambiguity, where close collaboration with others is required to drive clarity

·         Strong listening and communication skills in order to understand the requirements of stakeholders, with ability to critically evaluate requests and project proposals

·         Planning, time management and organisational skills, the ability to deliver under pressure and to tight deadlines
