One of the most desired golf jobs is Club or Head Professional, providing lessons to members, maintaining the pro shop, and other responsibilities. Another prominent role is the Director of Golf, overseeing all the golf operations, staff, and course maintenance. If you are very ambitious and a great leader, your dream job may be General Manager. Alternatively, you also may love working in the Pro Shop, helping golfers find the right equipment.

But the best job at a golf course is really a personal choice. What would you love to do when you come to work every day? If you adore the outdoors and enjoy the challenge of making perfect golf greens and fairways, managing golf course maintenance may be right up your alley.

The salary for golf jobs varies by position, location, and type of employer. Certainly, golf jobs at prestigious resorts and exceptionally talented golf professionals on the PGA Tour will be at the top end of earnings. But there are particular golf jobs that pay better than others.

  • General Manager ($55,000 -$60,000 average, up to $100,000+)
  • Head Golf Professional ($44,000 - $50,000 average, up to $97,000+)

Turning your passion for golf into a career takes hard work and determination. Many people dream of being a golf pro on the PGA tour, but this represents only a fraction of the ways you can make a career out of golf.

You can gain experience with entry-level jobs such as a golf sales associate, caddy, greenkeeping, and other jobs that do not generally require an education. Internships are also excellent opportunities to start your career. There are multiple types of educational programs, including sports management, golf management, business, sports marketing, and sports media, which can launch careers.

Dependability, a strong work ethic, a robust knowledge of the game, and a willingness to travel or relocate are all valuable to help you make a career out of golf.

The PGA has its own Professional Golf Management (PGM) program. When this is completed, it is the most common and accessible path to getting a job with the PGA.

Another option is to become a PGA apprentice. You have to be enrolled in PGM Level 1 courses to become an apprentice and fulfill the basic requirements of the PGA, including taking a playing test and a knowledge test.

Additionally, you can complete a Golf Management program at a qualifying university or college. It is important to ensure that the program you choose is considered a qualifying university or college aligned with the PGA requirements.
