Job Summary

Job Summary
 
The ideal mentor is personable, positive, autonomous, and focused on assisting student-athletes with achieving their academic objectives while maintaining appropriate boundaries.  Academic Mentors are exposed to sensitive information therefore all work with student-athletes is highly confidential. Academic Mentors effectively communicate with all Academic Counselors and the Learning Services Staff.  

 
Responsibilities

  • Work one-on-one with at-risk student-athletes within a structured program for academic support.

  • Facilitate student understanding and independence in time management, note taking, and written and oral communication skills.

  • Write daily session reports and student evaluations.

  • Communicate with students, the Learning Services Staff, Academic Counselors, and administrators in an appropriate manner.

  • Promptly respond to all telephone calls and emails from the Learning Services Staff, Academic Counselors, and all other Athletic Department personnel.

  • Follow professional code of conduct and adhere to all NCAA and Big 10 rules.

  • Complete all required online and in-person mentor training prior to working with student-athletes, and attend mentor training and supervision meetings.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and abide by all ASP Learning Services rules and regulations.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and abide by all applicable NCAA and Big 10 compliance rules and regulations.

  • Keep all information about student-athletes strictly confidential.

  • Other duties as assigned.



Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited postsecondary institution.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Personable, understanding, and patient.

  • Successful experience working in a team environment.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations of learners at various skill levels.

  • Ability to work nights, evenings, and weekends.



Desired Qualifications

  • Teaching experience and/or experience within an educational setting.

  • Ability to work between periods of Sunday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Monday through Thursday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
