Job Summary

Head Men’s Wrestling Coach

Position Summary: The Head Men’s Wrestling Coach serves as head coach and chief administrator of the men’s wrestling program. The Head Coach will build and manage the program to ensure the competitive performance of the team as well as the development of each student-athlete. OCU competes as a member of the NAIA and Sooner Athletic conferences.
The Head Coach reports directly to the Athletic Director and is a member of the Athletics Department.

Education/Experience:

A bachelor’s degree is required.

Three (3) to five (5) years of collegiate or high school coaching experience is required.

Prior successful collegiate coaching experience with NAIA coaching experience is preferred. Experience in athletic recruiting is preferred.

A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.

Essential Functions:
•   Demonstrate an attitude and behavior that reflects the values and mission of the department and University.
•   Academic and Teaching Responsibilities:
o   Teach sport classes for academic credit, regularly monitor academic status of players, develop programs and services to support academic success, develop and execute strategic plan to maintain five-year graduation rate of team members, all within the requirements established by the University and academic units.
•   Coaching Responsibilities:
o   Plan, organize and conduct practices and training programs that will result in a highly competitive wrestling program including, but not limited to: teach advanced offensive/defensive skills, game, and team strategies, enforce standards of conduct and behavior for team members, and remain current and utilize successful coaching strategies and techniques.
•   Recruitment Responsibilities:
o   Responsible for the development and oversight a successful recruitment program of student athletes for men’s wrestling including, but not limited to the following activities: identify and recruit highly skilled athletes, coordinate the development of recruitment materials, and make final determination of scholarship offers to student athletes. All recruitment activities will be conducted within the rules, policies and procedures established by OCU, the Sooner Athletic Conference and the NAIA.
•   Administrative Responsibilities:
o   Ensure the administration of the men’s wrestling program: ensure compliance with all Conference rules by players, prepare competitive schedules for AD, oversee all administrative tasks related to home games and events, plan and lead team meetings, initiate disbursement of scholarship funds (within conference and University guidelines), monitor program budget, coordinate maintenance and facility improvements with appropriate staff, attend departmental meetings and serve on university committees as assigned.
•   External Relations and Development Responsibilities:
o   Work closely with appropriate Athletics and University staff and departments to increase the visibility of the men’s wrestling team on campus and within the NBA Team Community, as well as regionally, and nationally. Activities include, but are not limited to: develop promotional public relations pieces and maintain a relationship with media presences, organize and support an active booster club, administer coaching and youth clinics, develop and maintain relationships with coaches at regional high schools and junior colleges, prepare and implement multi-year development plan to strategically increase program revenue, become a university presence at athletic and other events.
•   Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
•   Thorough understanding of and commitment to NAIA rules and regulations.
•   Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
•   Knowledge of student-athlete recruitment principles.
•   Knowledge of student-athlete scholarship process.
•   Ability to demonstrate wrestling skill and technique and other physical conditioning.
•   Ability to establish a productive rapport with team members.
•   Familiarity with academic requirements for student-athletes.
•   Ability to apply budgeting and fiscal planning techniques.
•   Ability to maintain a cooperative working relationship with faculty, students, staff, and the public.
•   Ability to represent the wrestling team and athletic programs including skill in developing promotional materials and skill in public speaking/presentation.
•   Knowledge of fund-raising activities in support of athletic programs and teams.
•   Ability to obtain a CDL for team travel.
•   Technical fluency to effectively use computers, software, applications, and social media platforms as required.

Physical Requirements:
•   Constantly performs physical coaching duties.
•   Constantly visually identifies, observes, and assesses.
•   Frequently operates a computer and other office machinery.
•   Frequently communicates with university constituents.
•   Frequently moves to accomplish tasks and/or to get from one worksite to another.
•   Frequently moves gym equipment.

Working Conditions:
•   Work is primarily indoors, but at times may be required to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.
•   Will be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones and office machines. May be exposed to steady, loud noises.
•   Significant evening, night, and weekend work is required.
•   Off-campus, state and regional travel is required.
