Job Summary


Title: Associate Counsel
FLSA Status:   Exempt 
Reports to: General Counsel 

Education/Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school.

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience at a law firm or as in-house counsel.

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.



Basic Function:
Perform a variety of substantive legal functions as part of the Houston Texans’ (“Club”) Legal Department, which includes the Houston Texans and its affiliate, Lone Star Sports & Entertainment, with primary responsibilities being drafting, negotiating, and reviewing commercial contracts; active and strategic management of various Club policies; and advising internal clients on various legal matters.   

Skills Required:

  • Strong teamwork and relationship management skills, with the ability to work effectively as a liaison between the Legal department and internal clients and external partners/vendors.

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and deadlines in a high-energy environment with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive or proprietary information.

  • Ability to be flexible and resourceful in response to changing priorities and needs.

  • Demonstrated willingness to continuously acquire new competencies and accept new challenges.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Display strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create and maintain solid working relationships at all levels across the organization and externally. 

  • Ability to maintain high personal and professional ethical standards.

  • Policy setting capabilities associated with the job’s purpose and essential responsibilities.

  • Ability to work extended hours and/or weekends as required by deadlines and project load.

  • Ability and internal drive to demonstrate a winning attitude and a strong work ethic in the performance of all job responsibilities.

 
 Job Function (duties and responsibilities):

  •   Draft, negotiate, and review various commercial contracts, including sponsorship agreements, suite lease agreements, vendor contracts, non-disclosure agreements, and event agreements.

  • Research various legal questions (e.g., within Club’s contracts or NFL policies) and provide clear recommendations to internal staff.

  • Assist with managing and advising regarding various intellectual property matters.

  • Assist in drafting and updating various contract templates for use in Club’s contract management system.

  • Manage the Club’s business continuity plans. 

  • Manage and enforce the Club’s document retention policy.

  • Assist on special projects as assigned.

  • Perform various other tasks that may be assigned from time to time by the General Counsel or the Chief Legal and Administrative Officer.

  • Position requires routine face-to-face personal interaction with other Club personnel; therefore, job responsibilities must be physically performed in the Club offices and not in a telecommuting manner.
