Job Summary

Manhasset High School (in the Manhasset Union Free School District) is a public high school

located in the North Shore of Long Island in western Nassau county. It is ~20 miles east of New

York City with a ~27 minute commuter train ride away. The crew program is a diverse, vibrant

group of girls and boys in novice and varsity (including the learn to row program). It is dedicated

to providing a supportive environment for the athletes to establish bonds, build confidence and

sportsmanship to work cohesively together to achieve a common goal.

We strive to provide all of our athletes the tools to excel and succeed in life’s many challenges

both academically and professionally.

The crew director will lead a staff of 8 coaches split between novice and varsity teams.

 

Qualifications:

• Highly motivated candidates, possessing strong leadership and communication skills.

• Educate coaches, parents and athletes in all aspects of rowing techniques and best practices.

• Boating license and ability to drive and operate motorized boats/launch.

• Ability to safely navigate crowded waterway(s) with boat traffic from other rowing clubs, as

well as private boats and commercial vessels.

• Prior experience in a rowing or coxswain capacity and knowledge of internal rowing language.

• CPR/First Aid Certification.

• Ability and knowledge to assist with equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities:

• The Head Coach will have responsibility for all aspects of the Manhasset Crew program from

grades 8-12, including scheduling and running practices and training sessions on and off the

water, liaising with the management coordinator organizing weekend regatta travel and

lineups, and providing leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of the

program.

• The Head Coach will also be expected to develop, uphold, promote the mission, philosophy,

vision and best practices of the crew program and maintain a close relationship with the

school athletic dept.

• Promote, accelerate and grow the program into a premier club.

• Successful candidates will also have the proven ability to constructively collaborate with both

adults and children in a positive spirit.

• Serve as an inspirational leader and positive role model. Help drive the culture of the program

to instill a competitive yet collaborative environment for all.

 

• Draw from a strong working knowledge of crew and rowing to plan and facilitate daily,

meaningful practices, and execute effective teaching/coaching techniques during races.

• Mentor and provide leadership to the coaches as well as the athletes. Provide written

reviews for each of the coaches at the start and end of each season (Fall and Spring).

• Comply with safety policies and procedures. Coordinate any safety practice drills as needed.

Help evolve safety policies and procedures to ensure they are up-to-date and applicable.

• Oversee boathouse and equipment organization and maintenance. Lead and delegate as

necessary administration and maintenance.

• Market, promote and recruit athletes for the program not limited to Manhasset. Seek

opportunities to recruit external athletes.

• Work with athletes and any college recruiting offices for input/guidance and/or written

recommendations at the athletes request.

• Coordinate out-of-season and summer activities and training for student-athletes in program

and recommend/develop enrichment opportunities for all grades.

• Assist in setting and adjusting boat rigging/oar inboard/outboard.

• Lead and run seat races and provide input on boating lineups.

• Be comfortable working with athletes new to the sport, helping develop those athletes to be

competitive novice level rowers.

• Maintain ongoing relationships with alumni.

• Assist in developing and executing fundraising ideas with the management coordinator and

board president.

Schedule:

• Flexible schedule

• Monday to Friday

• Weekend availability

• Attend monthly board meetings and any board members as necessary

• Pay commensurate with experience (hourly rate)
