Job Summary

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the primary performance nutrition contact and liaison between members of the coaching staff, student-athletes, parents, physicians, members of the Student-Athlete Health & Welfare Team, other allied health personnel, sport administration, and others for the assigned sport(s).
  • Provide a high level of customer service and communication at all times to all entities.
  • Clinical application and administration of high-level comprehensive performance nutrition, injury risk mitigation, and lifetime wellness services for student-athletes as assigned.
  • Develop and administer comprehensive, sports-specific performance nutrition counseling and education for student-athletes.
  • Counseling, exercise science, and other allied health personnel.
  • Participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary disordered eating task force.
  • Perform body composition assessments, results interpretation, and education for student-athletes.
  • Assist with the coordination of Athletics Dining initiatives.
  • Consult with team coaches and directors of operations to coordinate menu design and sports-specific performance fueling for teams before, during, and after competitions and during travel.
  • Attend team practices, competitions, strength and conditioning sessions, and other team events as needed and/or directed.
  • Collaborate with Student-Athlete Health and Welfare personnel and coaching personnel to develop protocols to monitor and enhance rest, recovery, and regeneration; hydration; and athlete readiness.
  • Provide written and verbal reports to Student-Athlete Health and Welfare personnel and coaching personnel as needed and/or assigned.
  • Research, evaluate, educate, and recommend appropriate performance supplementation for student- athletes.
  • Participation in Performance Team meetings and other committees, groups, special projects, and/or other initiatives as assigned.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative alliances with multiple stakeholders at the University.
  • Use technology and social media to foster an effective and efficient overall experience for student- athletes and department team members.
  • Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse.
  • Maintain a safe environment for student-athletes to fuel, hydrate and perform.
  • Provide care based on standard Commission on Dietetic Registration guidelines as directed by a physician, and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide written and/or verbal reports to fellow Student-Athlete Health and Welfare personnel, physicians, coaching personnel, and other pertinent individuals as needed and/or requested.
  • Assist with recruitment, retention, and hiring of highly qualified and competent Student-Athlete Health & Welfare personnel at all levels.
  • Assist with the research and determination of current and future needs within the department then assist with the development of detailed proposals as directed.
  • Assist with developing and reviewing the annual budget and ensuring budgetary compliance through efficient financial management.
  • Assist with the research and procurement of new equipment, as well as ensure the repair and replacement of existing equipment.
  • Maintain proper documentation, record keeping, and utilization statistics.
  • Assist with management of inventory, supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining various social media outlets.
  • Maintain the organization, administration, inventory, and staffing of performance nutrition facilities.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Act as liaison with other members of the athletic department team in issues involving student-athletes, including compliance, academics, student-athlete health and welfare, athletic counseling, and others.
  • Collaborate with Student-Athlete Health and Welfare personnel, coaches, Athletic Counseling and mental health personnel, and other exercise science and allied health personnel on research projects.
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Represent the University and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at University, State, Regional, and national conferences and/or meetings as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of Performance Dietitian Fellows.
  • Supervision and education of assigned students enrolled in clinical internships within the University and professional interns / residents.
  • Supervision and education of other performance nutrition team members as assigned. 

Travel:

  • Travel with assigned team(s) as needed and/or directed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in clinical nutrition, exercise science or a related field.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) with active status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
  • Competence in obtaining and interpreting body composition, energy balance, and other performance science measurements.
  • Competence in managing disordered eating cases.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy.
  • Knowledge of complementary medicine, ergogenic aids, herbal supplements, and nutritional supplements.
  • Knowledge of food service quality and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of unique aspects of student-athlete populations.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Compliance and understanding of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules.
  • Ability to meet Continuing Education requirements as established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and the State of Michigan (pending).
  • Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non- traditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the position.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, work in various environmental conditions, and assist injured individuals on / off playing surfaces.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in nutrition or a related field.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience as a Registered Dietitian in intercollegiate or professional athletics.
  • Board certification as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical record system.
