Job Summary

 

Position Description: The Athletic Trainer will perform objective evaluations, comprehensive initial treatments, recommend appropriate care, offer education opportunities, and provide onsite coverage according to department policies & procedures & athletic training protocol.

 

Specific to this position: The Athletic Trainer is a part-time position scheduled to work up to 20 hours weekly from mid-August through mid-March annually. Occasionally there maybe need for weekend game coverage. On rare occasion, position may exceed 20 hours in a week. Generally, this will be from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm Sundays, 5:30 am to 9:00 am Monday through Friday. Additionally, there are three scheduled weekend spirit competitions in the Spring which may require travel.

 

Requirements:

 


  • A bachelor's degree in Health, Physical Education or related field is required. A Master's degree is preferred.

  • Must be a NATA Certified Athletic Trainer.

  • Must be licensed in the State of Oklahoma.

  • Must be in good standing with Oklahoma Medical Licensing Board.

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience as an athletic trainer, preferably in a college or university setting.

  • A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted in lieu of minimum requirements.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 


  • Ability to provide appropriate and quality athletic training for student-athletes.

  • Skill in athletic training techniques, principals, and practices.

  • Ability to adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations of the university, conferences, and any other relevant agencies or entities.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.

  • Ability to have a flexible work schedule in support of varied athletic seasons and events.

  • Ability to accept supervision from leadership and work well as a member of a team.

  • Technical fluency in commonly used computer software and applications including MS Office.

  • Ability to represent the Athletics Department as well as the university in a professional manner.

  • Knowledge of NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA governing rules; BOC Code of Ethics; NATA Position statements.

  • Skill in employee supervision and management.

  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 


  • Demonstrate an attitude and behavior that reflects the mission and values of the university and athletics department.

  • Coordinate the treatment of athlete injuries:

  • Conduct an initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness to provide emergency or continued care and to determine whether they should be referred to physicians for diagnosis and treatment. 

  • Prepare athletes for practice and competition: apply protective or injury preventive devices, such as tape, bandages, or braces, to body parts, such as ankles, fingers, or wrists.

  • Care for athletic injuries, using physical therapy equipment, and other techniques.

  • Implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries

  • Evaluate athletes' readiness to play and provide participation clearances as needed.

  • Assess and report the progress of recovering athletes. 

  • Coordinate administrative activities in support of the athletic training program:

  • Develop and promote educational resources on injury prevention and management, conditioning and other athletic concerns.

  • Maintain proper documentation on each student athlete according to departmental policies regarding documentation.

  • Make recommendations for protective equipment and other purchases to the Associate Athletic Director.

  • Maintain professional working relationship with Health Center and Counseling Services on campus and the local network of community medical services.

  • Ensure adherence to established university policies and procedures

  • Maintain required certifications, license, and remain up to date on trends and best practices in athletic training.

  • Other duties as assigned. Examples may include participation in departmental or campus-wide initiatives, programs, and projects.
