Job Summary


Essential Duties Summary

  • Establishes and maintains standards of appropriate behavior and provides proper supervision of student athletes at all times.
  • Works with cheerleaders & mascots during practices and events. Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages students to participate (i.e. tryouts, clinics, recruitment, etc.). Expertise in the technical aspects of cheer, including the ability to teach both female and male athletes.
  • Organize and supervise weekly practices for both the Cheerleaders and the Mascot that develop skills and enhance physical conditioning while maximizing safety of all involved. Works with event services coordinators in scheduling facilities for practices and events. Instructs cheerleaders & mascot, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Observes cheerleaders & mascots, during events and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement. Insure that the required level of first aid/ CPR coverage exists for all scheduled events and implement proper emergency procedures to treat any injuries that may occur at an event.
  • Coordinates travel arrangements for games and/or events. Maintains current cheerleading coaching certification through the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administration. Attendance at all home football games, home Men's Basketball games, and home Women's basketball games.
  • Travel with cheer team to additional away football games, basketball tournaments, and any cheer competitions at which the cheer team performs. Additional attendance may be required at other select athletic events or activities related to the cheer team.
  • Acts as a team representative and promotes cheerleading by communicating with several outlet follows established procedures for supplies and uniforms. Works with the Program Coordinator for Student Engagement to develop a policy for awards (i.e. submits a list of award winners, presents awards at the end of the season, etc.).
  • Participates in special activities to include various events held by the University (i.e. award nights, pep rallies, etc.). Maintains eligibility for emergency contact information, equipment inventory, and other related records. Assists student athletes in the registration process (financial aid, housing, campus tours, etc.).
  • Attends development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching/advising performance. Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards cheerleaders, mascots, officials, administration, and spectators. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.



Education

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university or equivalent.


Work Experience

  • Requires one to three years of related experience.
  • Requires working knowledge of specialized practices, equipment and procedures.
  • Must have extensive training and experience in cheerleading and choreography.

Leadership/Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No supervisory responsibility for employees or students.

Work Complexity/Budget Authority

  • Tasks are multiple and diverse with some interrelationship across processes.
  • Handles some unrelated functions.
  • Work requires the direct application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents.
  • May monitor budget activities but no responsibility for budget and expenditure authority.

  • Performs duties within scope of general University policies, procedures and objectives.
  • Analyzes problems and performs needs assessments.
  • Uses judgment in adapting broad guidelines to achieve desired result.
  • Regular exercise of independent judgment within accepted practices.
  • Makes recommendations that affect policies, procedures and practices.
  • Refers exceptions to policy and procedures to the supervisor.

Personal/Organizational Contacts

  • Regular contact with others, including students, general public, visitors and University personnel.
  • Purpose of contacts is to explain, clarify or interpret information. May handle confidential information and some complex matters.

Customer Service Relationships

  • Assesses and diffuses problem situations and requires influencing others to reach consensus.
  • Requires tact and diplomacy to handle difficult customer situations.
  • Requires advanced interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain internal and external customer relationships.
  • Explores alternatives and creative solutions to meeting the needs of the customer.

Working/Environmental Conditions

  • Work is performed within routine office environment with no exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions.
  • Physical demands are usually limited to sitting or standing in one location much of the time.
  • Some stooping, lifting or carrying objects of light weight may be required.
