Job Summary


Responsibilities

Sports Nutrition-related Clinical Care (45%)

  • Provides clinical and educational sports nutrition services to support the optimal performance and health of the student-athletes and athletic teams under the direction and guidance of the Director of Athletic Medicine and Director of Performance, Athletics.
  • Counsels athletes on the dietary management of nutrition-related medical concerns, including diabetes, IBS, food allergies, celiac disease, etc, when necessary.
  • Works with all team physicians, athletic medicine staff (athletic trainers, physical therapists, nursing, research assistant), athletics staff (strength coaches, coaches) related to nutritional needs for all varsity athletes.
  • Provides eating disorders care for athletes in treatment, and prevention services for athletes at risk.
  • Oversees weight management policies and participates in weight certification programs, including directing collaboration between UHS and Athletics staff, for all weight class sports (lightweight rowing and wrestling).
  • Measures body composition and assesses nutrition needs to assists student athletes with maintaining proper body composition.
  • Works with the Director of Performance, Athletics to oversee testing, procedures, and policies related to body composition assessment and data.

Outreach & Education (45%)

  • Provides outreach to the coaching staff and teams, and conducts trainings on nutrition for performance, travel, and meal planning.
  • Serves as content expert in supplement safety in sport for Athletic Medicine and Athletic staff and serves as the institutional appointee for supplement education and safety as recommended by the NCAA.
  • Is responsible for sports-nutrition related web-content and social media accounts.
  • Oversees sports nutrition-related education materials used by staff.
  • Provides nutrition education to student athletes and athletic staff through social media, fueling station table events, grocery store tours, cooking classes, and group programming.

Management/Leadership (10%)

Business and Quality Integration

  • Authors, edits, and maintains sports nutrition-related policies within the Nutrition Services Policy and Procedure Manual. Partners with appropriate internal and external departments in crafting evidenced based policies.
  • Works with the outpatient Clinical Dietitian to identify, review, and prioritize opportunities to improve organization efficiency and effectiveness through the use of technology and automation. Develops and maintains the nutrition templates in the EMR with communication, efficiency, data use, and outcome evaluations at the forefront. Appropriately implements current dietetics language and scope. Advises on accurate use of nutrition related procedural and diagnostic codes.

 

Professional Interface

  • Develops goals and objectives for the sports nutrition program and proposes sports nutrition policy changes regarding student-athlete care.
  • As time allows, and in collaboration with his/her supervisor, may establish UHS as a community partner in meeting the needs of area dietetic students. May develop and coordinate experiential learning opportunities with local Universities and Dietetic Internships to offer rotations in sports dietetics.
  • May lead and direct the work of others including student peer advisors, student workers, nutrition students, dietetic interns, or professional fellows.

Financial Management

  • Functions as the budget manager for the overall operating budget for sports and outpatient clinical nutrition services.
  • Develops and analyzes the operating budget, along with the outpatient Clinical Dietitian, using historical data, and trends while meeting requirements of the UHS Finance department.
  • Determines capital budget needs based on equipment condition, system design, and market developments to ensure necessary resources for provision of high-quality nutrition resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in clinical nutrition, food and nutrition, or related area, granted from a US regionally accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.
  • Active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association
  • Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice
  • Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with proven ability to be self-directed, to forge partnership, and to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Solid clinical skills, experienced sports dietitian, and experienced counseling for eating disorders.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Nutrition or a related field
