Position Summary: (paragraph describing the purpose and scope of the position)

The consultant will work closely with the Health team to design an e-learning curriculum for Healthy Athletes and Healthy Communities clinical volunteers, as well as other healthcare professionals.  The consultant will work closely with a team of content experts, ensuring that curricula and supporting tools, modules and other resources are based on sound instruction design methodologies, adult learning principles, and take advantage of various learning technologies. The consultant will also help design content for resources that target broader audiences as part of the inclusive health strategy, including healthcare provider organizations and others.  The consultant will also work closely with the e-learning and resources platform development contractor(s) to ensure curriculum is represented appropriately on the online platform.

Primary Responsibilities: (List the key responsibilities in order of importance)

Primary Projects

  1. Gain an understanding of Special Olympics’ health strategy and local activities through a review of documents and conversations with SOI and SO Program staff.
  2. Design online Train the Trainer (TTT) modules for each of the Healthy Athletes disciplines.
  3. Design additional modules for topics that are pertinent to all volunteers for Healthy Athletes, Healthy Communities, and Fitness, as well as other clinical and nonclinical professionals, including an overview on intellectual disability, general practices for caring for a person with an intellectual disability, barriers to care, etc.
  4. Collaborate with content experts such as the Association of University Centers on Disability (AUCD) and the American Academy on Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) in designing modules and other resources tailored to targeted audiences.
    1. In collaboration with SOI inclusive health team, advise and create resources templates and framework for the broader inclusive health audience.
  5. Identify, recommend, and create if necessary, continuing education opportunities for clinical professionals.
  6. Liaise with external partners on efforts to adapt curricula for international audiences.
  7. Conduct preliminary focus group with samples of targeted audience on needs online learning utilization.

 

For all content developed for items 2-5 above, responsibilities include

  1. Provide recommendations for ways that the curriculum can be presented in an online course.
  2. Review of all current curricula, handbooks, and available information for each disciplines.
  3. Create curriculum frameworks that reflect behavioral-based competencies and meta-learning principles.
  4. Identify curriculum hierarchy and shared curriculum content across all Healthy Athletes disciplines.
  5. Author curriculum syllabi for each curriculum in conjunction with relevant health staff and consultants.
  6. Maintain multiple curriculum project plans with milestone steps, due dates, and ownership.
  7. Ensure curriculum assessment practices are varied and reflect current and sound educational pedagogy.
  8. Ensure curriculum can be translated into Spanish for Spanish speaking care providers in the United States and are accessible for people with disabilities.

 

Required Qualifications: (list what the candidate must have to do the job)

  • 5 or more years of experience in a curriculum development / instructional design role or similar
  • An undergraduate degree in communication, education, design, or related field (or a technical field)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small to medium projects while working cross-functionally with multiple teams and stakeholders in IT environment
  • Experience developing and supporting training for technical/IT related positions
  • Experience and knowledge of the e-learning products and functionalities as they apply to online learning
  • Ability to apply adult learning principles and incorporate this into curriculum design and development
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. This includes skill in collaborating with subject matter experts and managers to help write, design, and develop technical IT (information technology) content
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in MS Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills
  • Interest in working with people with intellectual disabilities

  • Professional experience using e-learning software
  • A graduate degree in communication, education, design, or related field (or a technical field)
  • Experience working with people with intellectual disabilities
  • Fluency in language other than English
