Job Summary

Job Description

  • Aid in providing independent advice to athletes regarding their rights, resources and responsibilities under the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, and all applicable rules and regulations from the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, United States Olympic Committee, International Federations and National Governing Bodies, as well as anti-doping and SafeSport rules and policies
  • To assist in mediating disputes involving athletes.
  • Help promote the services of the office
  • Implement data tracking tools
  • Create an environment welcoming and accessible to athletes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Athlete Ombudsman in all aspects of the role of the office and its service to athletes.
  • Help create and deliver an environment that is accessible, supportive, competent, inviting, helpful and resourceful.
  • Adhere to the core principles of the Athlete Ombudsman Office: independence, impartiality, and confidentiality.
  • Assist with researching and understanding laws, rules, requirements, policies, and precedent of all relevant bodies affecting athletes.
  • Assist in the resolution of athlete concerns and disputes, fact-finding, facilitated communication, and mediation.
  • Advise parties in understanding other available options for resolution in cases where informal resolution is not attained.
  • Assist in solving complex problems facing athletes and prevent future problems.
  • Assist in reviewing relevant policies and documents and provide recommendations to advocate for fairly administered policies and processes that are compliant with the Sports Act, USOC Bylaws, and other governing rules.
  • Assist in managing case logs and preparing reports, presentations and memos.
  • Coordinate with Athlete Ombudsman in providing support to athletes at Olympic, Paralympic, Pan American and Parapan American Games.
  • Develop and maintain strong relations with athletes, NGBs, outside counsel, and other stakeholders in order to effectively manage communication and facilitate resolution of disputes.
  • Develop and maintain an approprialution professional leadership role.
  • Be available at all times to support the work of the Athlete Ombudsman Office.
  • Answer inquiries in a timely fashion.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Bachelors degree
  • Law degree or demonstrated proficiency in legal analysis, research and writing.
  • Advanced degree or certification in dispute resolution, or closely related field, preferred.
  • Licensure
  • Certification in dispute resolution preferred

Experienc

  • Demonstrated patterns of a strong work ethic and accomplishment.
  • Strong athletic background or prior experience working for a sports organization, with strong preference for knowledge of Olympic and Paralympic Movement.
  • Training and/or experience in crisis response or with individuals in crisis.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain integrity, exercise independent judgment and prudence in dealing with sensitive, confidential matters and remain non-judgmental.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain the trust and confidence of individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Fast, resourceful learner
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Tools, Equipment, and Conditions

  • Non-traditional work hours and schedule as required with some extended hours
  • Some domestic and international travel
