Job Summary
Special Olympics DC - Sports Manager
Position Summary (Exempt):
The Sports Manager is responsible for assisting in planning, organizing, and managing operations for 10 Olympic-type sports: Basketball, Bowling, Bocce, Flag Football, Golf, Soccer, Speed Skating, Track & Field, Tennis, Volleyball. This role conducts weekly training and competitions for athletes with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), working with coaches and sports-related volunteers.
Program Responsibilities
- Conduct events in accordance with established Special Olympics Rules
- Secure and manage appropriate facilities for training and championship participation
- Compile training calendars for the sports department
- Conduct weekly training for athletes on sport training skills and techniques of the 10 sports offered
- Communicate with participating programs, adult independent athletes and Unified Partners.
- Ensure that coaches have completed certification and that registration paperwork is submitted
- Oversee Adult Unified Sports athletes & Unified partners for SODC Adult delegations/ programs for evening sports training and competition
- Enter athletes and training data into the Games Management System database
- Assist in recruitment and training of volunteers for weekly training and competitions
- Assist in quality control duties/tasks to ensure that rules and regulations are fol
- lowed
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Physical Education, related field of study; or a minimum of two (2) years of related work experience.
· Experience and knowledge of sports, event management, volunteer management. Experience with persons with intellectual disabilities preferred but not required. Training will be provided.
· Effective verbal and written communication.
· Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment but also work independently on assigned tasks and organize work to meet established deadlines.
· Ability to solve problems using good judgment; understand when to seek assistance or guidance from others.
· Proficiency with MS Office including Microsoft Word and Excel.
· Must pass a background check
· Valid Driver’s License & ability to drive to training locations and transport sports equipment
· This position requires some heavy lifting (over 50 pounds).
· Work on one to two evenings per week for training during sports seasons & some weekends required
· Some out of state, overnight travel for trainings and national games when necessary.
SALARY - $65,000 per year
