Sports Information Director
Job Summary
The Sports Information Director (SID) plays a key role in managing media relations, overseeing event management, official social media accounts, and maintaining records/statistics for all intercollegiate sports at The Apprentice School. This position works closely with athletes, coaches, media outlets, and support staff to ensure accurate reporting of athletic achievements and smooth operation of events. This position will manage publications, oversee the athletic program’s digital presence, create promotional materials, and serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries.
Media Relations & Communications
- Develop and distribute timely press releases, including game results, weekly updates, and special promotions to media outlets, opponents, and Athletics digital platforms.
- Maintain relationships with local media (TV, radio, newspapers) and proactively pitch story ideas and game coverage. Keep local media updated on team achievements and individual honors (e.g., sports banquet award winners).
- Coordinate and oversee media coverage during home events and as needed for away games.
- Nominate athletes for awards like "Player of the Week" and "Academic All-American" recognition.
Publications & Digital Media Management
- Oversee team publications/media guides and briefs for “Currents” and “Yardline”
- Maintain and update daily the athletics website, GoBuilders.com
- Design and send newsletters ensuring accurate upkeep of audience email lists for effective communication.
- Manage official social media accounts by creating content, engaging with audiences, and tracking performance.
- Create and manage events on ticketing systems (Hometown Tickets), oversee sales and communication with attendees.
- Create and manage promotional materials (posters, schedule cards) and distribute them at the beginning of each season.
- Organize and manage players' photos, videos and historical archives to support the Hall of Fame preservation and recognition.
Event Management & Statistics
- Be in attendance at all home games and assist with away events as needed.
- Assist in organizing and managing athletic events, ensuring smooth operations and logistical support.
- Supervise the press box and stats table during home games, ensuring accurate collection and dissemination of game statistics.
- Coordinate the statistical coverage for all athletic events, ensuring all data is collected and provided to media, opposing teams, and published on all digital platforms post-event.
- Coordinate all game day staff including but not limited to security, officials, announcers, shot clock operators, etc.
Team & Administrative Support
- Act as a primary communicator for the athletic team, relaying information and coordinating team needs with staff and administration.
- Coordinate the distribution of athlete information to media, including sending visiting team information packages.
- Serve as the primary liaison for the VASIDA organization, including participation in All-State balloting.
- Willing to serve as a liaison on the USCAA level on national committees.
- Support the Apprentice Athletics Booster Club with requested information about the athletics program.
- Help maintain the athletics office by supporting day-to-day administrative functions.
Compliance/Eligibility
- Ensures that all Apprentice athletes are eligible under the rules and regulations of the USCAA, NCWA and NCAA.
- Coordinates with academics/craft staff to submit eligibility forms to governing bodies of USCAA and NCWA.
- Stays up to date on new/updated rules and regulations published by governing bodies.
Education & Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Sports Management, Journalism, or related field.
- Experience: Previous experience in sports information, media relations, event management and/or statistical analysis preferred.
Preferred Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in media relations, including press releases, pitching, and managing media relationships.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Advanced knowledge of sports statistics and familiarity with PrestoSports.
- Experience with SIDEARM Sports and content updates.
- Experience in social media management.
- Knowledge of design software (Adobe Photoshop, Canva).
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Additional Information
- Occasional evening and weekend hours required for game coverage and special events.
- Ability to travel to away games and events when necessary.
