Job Summary
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, supervise and monitor all facets of strength and conditioning programs for assigned teams
- Instruct proper lifting technique and assist in spotting when necessary.
- Assist in facility supervision and operations to include hours of operation, general maintenance and cleaning of the facility and its equipment.
- Monitor equipment check out.
- Assist in fitness testing, computation of results, and evaluation of all teams when required.
- Effectively and properly motivate athletes to achieve maximum potential in all areas of performance.
- Anticipate potential risks of injury, have the ability to implement emergency medical procedures.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with fellow strength & conditioning teammates, athletic administration, fellow Student-Athlete Health and Welfare teammates and sport coaching personnel.
- Maintain all required strength & conditioning certifications and memberships.
- Maintain current CPR/AED certifications.
- Anticipate potential safety risks, take measures to remove them, and in the event of an injury, have the ability to implement emergency medical procedures.
- Provide a high level of customer service and communications at all times to all entities.
- Adhere to and implement industry accepted, scientifically supported methodologies for all varsity athletic programs. Methods must be tested and properly implemented into the overall training plan for each athlete.
- Establish and maintain collaborative alliances with multiple stakeholders at the University of Michigan.
- Use technology and social media to foster an effective and efficient overall experience for student-athletes and department team members.
- Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse.
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and other credentialing organizations and the State of Michigan.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by the NCAA, Big 10 Conference, University of Michigan, and University of Michigan Department of Athletics.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's Degree in exercise science or other related field.
- Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist - National Strength and Conditioning Association.
- CPR/AED certification.
- Strong communication (written and verbal), organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multi-task, work independently and as a member of a team, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to lift objects in excess of 140 pounds, stand for extended periods (in excess of 8+ hours), work in various environmental conditions, and assist injured individuals on / off playing surfaces.
- Ability to create positive, high-energy, productive and supportive working relationships with student athletes, coaches, fellow strength & conditioning teammates and fellow Student-Athlete Health and Welfare teammates.
- Ability to champion a culture of innovative thought, life-long learning and continuous improvement.
- Commitment to promote an atmosphere of compliance and adherence to NCAA, Big Ten Conference, University and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Ability to meet Continuing Education requirements as established by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the State of Michigan, and other credentialing and/or licensing entities.
- Ability to follow policies and procedures set forth by the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
- Organizational and analytical skills with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate, and advance strategic plans that support student-athletes and the mission of the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and Student-Athlete Health & Welfare.
- Must possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, adaptability, initiative and stress tolerance to various situations in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
- Must provide a high level of customer service.
- Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non-traditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the position.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's Degree in exercise science, sports administration or other sports/exercise related field.
- USA Weightlifting Level 1 Coach / Sport Performance Coach or equivalent (e.g. Totten Training Systems, UKSCA, BAWLA, etc.).
